Abstract:Strategic renewal involves breaking with path dependency and it is therefore especially challenging for large and multinational firms. We studied how the interaction between top-down and bottom-up initiatives drives strategic renewal, using rich data collected through a longitudinal, partly real-time case study of a strategic renewal process by one large multinational company. We identified how tensions, resulting from the interaction of renewal initiatives, specifically concerned the organization’s resource distribution, its strategic and technological identity, and routines. We further uncover how these tensions and their resolutions (or lack thereof) shaped the dynamics of the strategic renewal process, bringing the organization in a continuous and dynamic state of non-equilibrium. We thus identify tensions as mechanisms that allow for deep-level learning and exploration of core strategic properties of the organization.
